1151 level sensors are commonly used for liquid level and liquid column pressure measurement in storage tanks, reactors, silos, wastewater tanks, and process vessels. Their price is not a single fixed value, but is jointly determined by measuring range, medium characteristics, structural materials, output signal, protection requirements, and degree of customization. For procurement personnel, comparing only initial quotations can easily overlook subsequent maintenance, downtime risks, and adaptation costs. Product value should be evaluated based on actual operating conditions.
Taking common industrial configurations as an example, standard diffusion silicon 1151 level sensors are generally suitable for clean water, ordinary wastewater, weakly corrosive liquids, and similar operating conditions. When the medium is characterized by strong acids, strong alkalis, high viscosity, high temperature, or crystallization, corrosion-resistant diaphragms, isolation diaphragms, flange mounting, or sanitary flush diaphragm structures are required, resulting in higher prices. The smaller the measuring range and the higher the accuracy requirement, the more stringent the requirements for sensing elements and calibration procedures.
Xi'an Shenghongchuang Instrumentation Co., Ltd., supported by the production base of Shaanxi Qinkong Sensor Technology Co., Ltd., can provide supporting services for pressure, level, differential pressure, temperature and humidity, flow, and intelligent digital display control instruments for industrial automation projects. When procuring 1151 level sensors, it is recommended to specify the on-site medium, pressure range, mounting method, signal interface, and explosion-proof rating at one time, so as to obtain a quotation that more closely reflects the actual delivery configuration.
Level sensors generally calculate liquid level height by measuring the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column. Common measuring ranges include 0 to 1 m, 0 to 5 m, 0 to 10 m, 0 to 20 m, and higher ranges. With the same structure, products with small ranges of 0 to 5 m are more sensitive to zero-point stability and temperature compensation, while ranges above 0 to 30 m require greater attention to overload capacity and long-term drift control.
Common accuracy grades include 0.5%FS, 0.25%FS, and 0.1%FS. If the measuring range is 10 m, 0.5%FS corresponds to a theoretical maximum error of approximately plus or minus 50 mm, while 0.25%FS is approximately plus or minus 25 mm. High-accuracy level sensors do not mean that errors are necessarily large; actual errors are also affected by installation location, changes in medium density, blockage of pressure ports, and electromagnetic interference.
4 to 20mA two-wire output is widely used in industrial field applications, offering good anti-interference performance and suitability for long-distance connection to PLCs, DCSs, or intelligent instruments. Where local display is required, an LED digital display head can be configured; where more comprehensive parameter prompts, menu operation, or communication diagnostics are needed, LCD display and communication methods such as RS485 and HART can be selected. Additional configurations will be directly reflected in the quotation.
Wetted materials must be confirmed as a priority when recommending corrosion-resistant level sensors. 304 stainless steel is suitable for most ordinary water-based media, while 316L stainless steel performs better in resistance to chloride ion corrosion. For media such as hydrochloric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, and strong alkaline solutions, specialized structures such as PTFE, Hastelloy, or isolation diaphragms may be required. Corrosion resistance cannot be determined solely by the term “stainless steel.”
Whether a strong alkali level sensor is corrosion-resistant depends on concentration, temperature, pressure, and contact time. For example, low-concentration alkaline solution at room temperature and high-concentration sodium hydroxide at 80 degrees Celsius have clearly different requirements for diaphragms and seals. When purchasing, the specific medium name, mass fraction, operating temperature, and cleaning frequency should be provided so that the manufacturer can confirm the diaphragm, sealing ring, and pressure-guiding structure.
Protection ratings generally include IP65, IP67, or higher. For outdoor installations, washdown areas, humid pump rooms, and wastewater treatment sites, particular attention should be paid to junction box sealing, cable sheathing, and waterproof breathable structures. If flammable gases or dust are present on site, the area classification should also be used to determine whether intrinsically safe, flameproof, or corresponding explosion-proof certification configurations are required.
Standard basic configurations of 1151 level sensors on the market are mostly used for continuous liquid level measurement of non-strongly corrosive liquids under normal temperature and pressure, and procurement budgets are generally relatively controllable. For single-unit, small-batch, and standard-range projects, quotations are mainly determined by measuring range, accuracy, and output signal. For bulk purchases, cable length, connector specifications, calibration reports, and packaging and transportation requirements should also be included in the calculation.
When used in chemical, energy, metallurgy, or high-temperature process applications, product prices generally increase. Reasons include upgrades to corrosion-resistant materials, remote seal flange configurations, high-temperature filling fluids, special seals, explosion-proof housings, and multi-point calibration. For sites where high temperature, high pressure, strong vibration, and strong electromagnetic interference coexist, low-priced general-purpose models often cannot ensure long-term stable operation.
Low-error level sensors are suitable for high-accuracy requirements, but they need to be evaluated together with the complete measurement chain. When liquid density changes significantly with temperature or formulation, hydrostatic level conversion results will deviate. When there is agitation, foam, or pulsating pressure inside the vessel, the impact should also be reduced through damping settings, optimized installation location, or alternative solutions such as differential pressure or radar.
LED level sensors and LCD level sensors have no absolute advantages or disadvantages; the choice depends on on-site viewing frequency and functional requirements. LED displays offer higher brightness and are suitable for brightly lit workshops, pump rooms, and areas near outdoor control cabinets, making long-distance reading more intuitive. Their display content generally focuses on real-time values, with a relatively simple structure.
The advantage of LCD displays is that they can show units, percentages, parameter menus, and some fault information, making them suitable for equipment commissioning, inspection, and operating conditions requiring local settings. However, display performance may be affected by low temperatures, strong sunlight, or certain viewing angles. If the sensor is installed in a location that is inconvenient to observe, local display is not a necessary configuration, and the budget can be allocated to corrosion resistance, explosion protection, or higher accuracy.
The differences between 3051 level sensors and 3351 level sensors are generally reflected in product series positioning, structural form, compatible interfaces, accuracy range, and optional communication functions. Different manufacturers may define model designations differently, so performance level cannot be judged by numbers alone. Specific data sheets should be consulted to confirm turndown ratio, diaphragm material, static pressure capability, temperature range, and output protocol.
Vibration-resistant level sensors are suitable for industrial sites near compressors, conveying equipment, construction machinery, agitated tanks, and locations with periodic shock. During selection, first distinguish whether vibration originates from the equipment body, pipeline pulsation, or liquid impact, and then determine whether buffer devices, extended mounting brackets, or remote installation methods are required.
At the product level, attention should be given to housing strength, internal potting process, cable fastening method, and anti-loosening capability of the process connection. For scenarios with noticeable vibration, it is recommended to use metal housings, reliably shielded cables, and standardized grounding methods, and to keep the sensor away from the direct influence areas of motors, frequency converters, and high-temperature heat sources. After installation, interlock verification can be performed at three liquid level points: empty tank, half tank, and full tank.
The procurement quotation should clearly state whether it includes damping settings, vibration-resistance requirements, cable length, mounting accessories, and factory inspection documentation. Requiring only “vibration resistance” without specifying vibration intensity, frequency, and installation location can easily result in a delivered configuration that does not match site requirements. For critical control points, factory inspection records for zero point, full scale, insulation performance, and other parameters may be requested.
A 24V-powered two-wire 4 to 20mA level sensor generally uses a loop connection in which “the positive power supply terminal connects to the sensor positive terminal, the sensor negative terminal connects to the positive analog input terminal of the control system, and the negative analog input terminal returns to the negative power supply terminal.” Actual terminal definitions should be based on the product nameplate, wiring diagram, and instruction manual, and should not be determined solely by wire color.
Before wiring, confirm that the supply voltage is stable within the rated range, and check whether the PLC analog input module is an active input or passive input. Shielded twisted-pair cable is recommended for long-distance wiring. The shielding layer is generally grounded at one end to reduce interference caused by frequency converters, motors, and contactors. Signal cables should not be laid parallel to power cables over long distances; where necessary, maintain a distance of more than 300 mm.
After energization, first verify the output value under empty-tank or known liquid-level conditions. For example, when 4mA corresponds to zero level and 20mA corresponds to full scale, 12mA generally corresponds to 50% of the range. If the displayed value fluctuates significantly, check the power supply ripple, grounding condition, sensor installation location, pressure port blockage, and liquid surface fluctuations in sequence before deciding whether to adjust the damping time.
Sanitary flush diaphragm level sensors are suitable for food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and media prone to adhesion. During installation, the diaphragm should be as flush as possible with the inner wall of the vessel to avoid grooves, dead corners, or material accumulation areas. Tri-clamps, gaskets, and welded connection dimensions should conform to vessel standards to prevent leakage or cleaning blind spots caused by mismatches.
Before CIP cleaning or SIP sterilization, confirm the maximum allowable temperature, duration, and pressure range of the product. High-temperature steam, alternating hot and cold conditions, and strong cleaning agents can affect the service life of seals. If the cleaning temperature exceeds normal operating conditions, temperature resistance requirements should be clearly stated during the quotation stage, and compatible diaphragm and sealing materials should be selected.
For projects requiring stable level control and standardized acceptance, it is recommended to compile the medium name, level range, density, temperature, pressure, interface dimensions, power supply method, output signal, explosion-proof requirements, and installation environment before procurement. Submitting these parameters to Xi'an Shenghongchuang Instrumentation Co., Ltd. can provide specific selection recommendations and accurate quotation solutions for the measuring range, material, accuracy, and supporting instruments of 1151 level sensors.
