3051 level sensors and 3351 level sensors are generally based on the differential pressure measurement principle. By collecting the pressure at the bottom of a vessel, the pressure difference between upper and lower pressure tapping points, or remote capillary pressure, they convert the data into liquid height, level percentage, or inventory data. Both can be used in water treatment, chemical storage tanks, boiler steam drums, food storage, and industrial automation control systems.
In actual product selection, 3051 and 3351 are not distinguished solely by their model numbers. Different manufacturers may define series naming, diaphragm materials, measuring ranges, communication protocols, and remote seal configurations differently. Therefore, the complete model, measuring range, measured medium, and installation method should be confirmed before procurement.
Generally, 3051 level sensors are more commonly used in standard industrial process measurement applications, with an emphasis on stability, compatibility, and proven engineering application; 3351 level sensors are often used in level measurement projects requiring more flexible range configurations, remote seals, or adaptation to complex operating conditions. Specific performance should still be based on product technical documentation and calibration reports.
For technical evaluators and procurement personnel, sensor accuracy, temperature effects, pressure resistance, output signals, wetted materials, and maintenance intervals should be compared under the same evaluation criteria, rather than determining product suitability solely by name or price.
3051 level sensors commonly use a standard differential pressure measurement structure and can measure liquid levels in sealed and open vessels through single-flange, double-flange, or impulse line configurations. For sites with clean media, minor temperature variations, and favorable pressure tapping conditions, installation and maintenance are relatively straightforward.
In some configurations, 3351 level sensors can offer a wider range of remote flanges, flush diaphragms, and corrosion-resistant connection options. They are suitable for viscous, crystallization-prone, particle-containing media or media for which long impulse lines are unsuitable. Remote seal structures can reduce the risk of clogging, but capillary length and ambient temperature can also cause zero drift.
The wetted parts of both product types are commonly available in materials such as 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy, tantalum, or PTFE lining. When handling strong acids, strong alkalis, or chloride-containing media, corrosion resistance should not be determined solely by a “corrosion-resistant” label; concentration, temperature, pressure, and cleaning frequency must also be considered.
For example, low-concentration alkaline solutions at room temperature and high-concentration alkaline solutions at 80℃ have significantly different requirements for diaphragm materials. Regarding whether strong alkali level sensors are corrosion-resistant, the answer depends on the compatibility of wetted materials. Incorrect material selection may result in diaphragm corrosion, leakage, or measurement drift within weeks or months.
Common outputs for 3051 and 3351 level sensors include 4mA to 20mA analog signals, HART communication, RS485 communication, or fieldbus interfaces. 4mA to 20mA is suitable for most PLCs, DCSs, and intelligent digital display control instruments, with wiring distances reaching several hundred meters. However, shield grounding and electromagnetic interference must still be considered.
Do high-accuracy level sensors have large errors? A high nominal sensor accuracy does not necessarily mean that the actual system error will be low. Nominal accuracy may reach 0.075%, 0.1%, or 0.2%, but factors such as installation height errors, changes in medium density, impulse line temperature differences, and uncalibrated zero points can all amplify field level deviations.
Using a 5m level range as an example, 0.1% accuracy corresponds to a theoretical error of approximately 5mm. If the density of the measured liquid fluctuates by 3% due to temperature changes and no compensation is applied, the calculated level may have a system deviation far greater than 5mm. Therefore, high-accuracy requirements should include simultaneous evaluation of medium density and temperature conditions.
Are low-error level sensors suitable for high-precision requirements? Yes, but only if the range is properly matched. If the actual level variation is only 0.5m but a 10m range is selected, both resolution and effective accuracy will be affected. It is generally recommended that the normal liquid level remain within 30% to 80% of the measuring range, while allowing margins for pressure fluctuations and overload.
Recommendations for corrosion-resistant level sensors cannot be separated from medium parameters. For acid and alkali storage tanks, the medium name, concentration range, maximum temperature, maximum pressure, and whether solid particles are present should be provided. Shenghongchuang can evaluate wetted-part solutions such as 316L, Hastelloy, tantalum, and PTFE according to operating conditions, together with suitable flange or threaded connection structures.
When selecting vibration-resistant level sensors, the focus should be on installation location and mechanical isolation. For locations near pump bodies, motors, compressors, or pipelines subject to frequent starts and stops, reinforced mounting brackets, short impulse connections, signal damping, and software filtering can be used. For sites with continuous strong vibration, the permitted vibration rating and anti-loosening measures for connectors should also be verified.
Sanitary flush-diaphragm level sensors are commonly used in food, pharmaceutical, fermentation, and high-cleanliness storage tanks. During installation, material accumulation dead zones should be avoided on the front of the diaphragm, and the inner wall of the welded flange must be smooth. CIP cleaning temperature and pressure must not exceed the product's specified limits. Once a flush diaphragm is scratched by a hard object, its pressure sealing performance and measurement stability may be affected.
If on-site display is required, LED level sensors are suitable for workshop environments with strong lighting and long-distance reading; LCD displays generally consume less power and provide more complete character information. The display only affects the on-site reading experience and should not replace technical evaluation of accuracy, power supply, communication protocol, and protection rating.
For wiring a 24V-powered level sensor, first confirm whether it is a two-wire or four-wire system. Two-wire 4mA to 20mA products are typically powered in series by a 24V DC power supply, with the positive terminal connected to the sensor power terminal and the signal loop connected to the PLC or display instrument input terminal. Power must be disconnected before wiring, and installation must follow the terminal definitions on the nameplate.
Shielded twisted-pair cable is recommended for signal cables. High-power cables and analog signal cables should be routed separately, with a spacing of 200mm or more. The shield layer is usually grounded at one end; specific practices should comply with the grounding specifications of the control cabinet to avoid interference currents caused by grounding at both ends.
The price range of 1151 level sensors is affected by measuring range, accuracy, diaphragm material, output type, explosion-proof rating, and remote seal configuration. The cost difference between standard configurations and corrosion-resistant remote seal configurations can be substantial. During procurement, prices should be compared based on complete technical specifications rather than only on the quotation for a single unit.
For project acceptance, it is recommended to complete at least zero-point verification, full-scale simulation, 4mA to 20mA output verification, sealing inspection, and continuous operation observation. For critical storage tanks, high-high level interlocks and low-low level alarms can be configured, and calibration records should be retained for subsequent maintenance and quality traceability.
To compare 3051 level sensors and 3351 level sensors, please provide Xi'an Shenghongchuang Instruments & Meters Co., Ltd. with the medium name, level range, vessel pressure, maximum temperature, installation interface, power supply method, and control system type. Technical personnel can then confirm the measurement principle, corrosion-resistant material, accuracy class, and matching intelligent digital display control instrument solution.
