Whether a strong alkali level sensor can resist corrosion over the long term cannot be determined solely by its product name or claims of being “acid- and alkali-resistant.” The concentration and temperature of media such as sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, and lime slurry, as well as tank pressure, impurity content, and the sensor's wetted diaphragm, sealing rings, and pressure-guiding structure, all directly affect service life and measurement stability.
For common low-temperature, atmospheric-pressure strong alkali level measurement applications, selecting compatible materials such as 316L stainless steel, Hastelloy, PTFE, and PVDF, together with a suitable isolation structure, can generally provide good corrosion resistance. However, when the medium temperature rises above 80°C, the concentration exceeds 30%, or crystallization, deposits, and severe scouring are present, material selection must be further refined.
Xi'an Shenghongchuang Instruments & Meters Co., Ltd. can leverage the manufacturing and testing capabilities of Shaanxi Qinkong Sensor Technology Co., Ltd. to configure level transmitters and supporting intelligent digital display control instruments for applications including storage tanks, reactors, chemical dosing tanks, and alkali pipelines, while providing non-standard customization and technical selection based on actual medium conditions.
The corrosion resistance of a level sensor should be assessed based on the complete wetted path, including the measuring diaphragm, process connection, pressure chamber, fill fluid, welds, sealing gaskets, and cable outlet. Even if the main material is alkali-resistant, incompatible sealing ring materials may swell, harden, or leak.
Strong alkalis do not affect all materials in exactly the same way. Some metals remain stable in dilute alkali at room temperature, but their corrosion rate can increase significantly under high-temperature and high-concentration conditions. Some plastics offer excellent chemical stability, but their mechanical strength, installation pressure, and long-term thermal aging must also be evaluated.
In addition, particles, crystallized salts, and bubbles in alkali solutions may adhere to or clog the measuring surface. For viscous alkali solutions prone to crystallization, flush diaphragm structures, flange diaphragm seal structures, or external pressure-guiding solutions are generally easier to maintain than narrow pressure-guiding holes.
During engineering evaluation, it is recommended to provide the medium name, maximum concentration, normal and maximum temperatures, tank pressure, level measuring range, installation port dimensions, and whether stirring vibration is present. These parameters determine whether the sensor is genuinely suitable for field use, rather than merely being “able to contact” the medium under laboratory conditions.
For continuous level measurement in strong alkali storage tanks, submersible hydrostatic level transmitters, flange-mounted differential pressure level transmitters, radar level meters, and ultrasonic level meters all have applicable uses. Differential pressure or radar solutions are more suitable for sealed pressurized vessels, while atmospheric-pressure pools and storage tanks can be selected comprehensively based on measuring range, installation space, and medium characteristics.
If the medium is prone to crystallization, wall adhesion, or foaming, non-contact radar level measurement can reduce the risk of direct contact with the medium. However, attention must still be paid to antenna material, installation position, and reflection interference from agitators, coils, and other components inside the tank. High-high and low-low level protection should also be configured for process points requiring interlock control.
A high-accuracy level sensor does not mean that errors will be small under all operating conditions. Rated accuracy, such as 0.2%FS or 0.5%FS, requires an appropriate measuring range, stable installation, known medium density, and regular calibration. When the range is too large, the output change corresponding to a small level variation is compressed, reducing actual control resolution.
For high-precision requirements, it is recommended to set the commonly used level control range between 30% and 80% of full scale, and compare the zero point, full scale, and on-site liquid level before commissioning. Shenghongchuang can provide signal options such as 4mA to 20mA and RS485 for convenient connection to PLCs, DCSs, and intelligent digital display control instruments.
For level measurement points near pump units, mixing tanks, mobile equipment, or automated production lines, in addition to corrosion resistance, vibration resistance rating, connection method, and cable fastening method should also be verified. Continuous vibration may loosen threaded connections or cause poor connector contact, resulting in fluctuating output signals.
Products with compact structures and reliable welded seals should be prioritized. Installation brackets should have sufficient rigidity to prevent resonance in long pressure-guiding tubes or long probe rods. In environments with significant vibration, a suitable damping time can be set at the PLC end, such as 1 second to 5 seconds, but excessive filtering must not be used to mask actual level abnormalities.
When wiring a 24V-powered level sensor, confirm the power polarity, output type, and shield grounding requirements. Two-wire 4mA to 20mA products generally share the same loop for power supply and signal, while RS485 communication products should be wired according to A and B terminal definitions, with communication cable length and termination matching properly controlled.
Where strong electromagnetic interference exists near power cables, frequency converters, and motors, signal cables should be routed separately from power cables, with a spacing of at least 200mm; the shield layer generally follows the principle of single-end grounding. After on-site wiring is completed, verify separately whether the outputs for empty, half-full, and full tanks correspond to 4mA, 12mA, 20mA, or the configured communication values.
When sanitary flush diaphragm level sensors are used in processes with high cleanliness, residue control, or cleanability requirements, ensure that the installation surface is flat and that the sealing gasket is undamaged, preventing weld burrs or dead corners from affecting diaphragm pressure loading. Installation torque should comply with the interface specification, as excessive tightening may damage the sealing surface.
The sensor installation position should avoid direct feed impact zones, agitation vortex zones, and areas near drain outlets. For hydrostatic level measurement, changes in medium density directly affect pressure conversion results. For example, a density deviation of 5% may also cause a system deviation of nearly 5% in the converted level, so parameters should be corrected according to the actual concentration.
Maintenance intervals can be established based on process risks. In continuous-production applications where alkali solutions are prone to crystallization, the measuring surface and wiring seals can be checked once every 1 month; for general atmospheric-pressure storage tanks, output verification can be performed every 3 months to 6 months. If zero drift, slower response, or surface scaling is detected, the equipment should be stopped promptly for inspection.
For level measurement products in the 1151, 3051, and 3351 series, the price range varies depending on measuring range, accuracy, diaphragm material, flange specification, signal protocol, and explosion-proof requirements. Procurement should be quoted based on a complete technical specification to avoid comparing only model names, which may result in the actual interface or corrosion resistance rating failing to meet project requirements.
Strong alkali level sensors can be corrosion-resistant, provided that wetted materials, sealing methods, temperature and pressure ranges, installation structures, and the actual medium are compatible. Simply selecting a “corrosion-resistant model” while overlooking concentration, temperature, and crystallization characteristics can easily lead to measurement drift, leakage, or premature failure.
Technical evaluation personnel should focus on confirming the complete medium composition, maximum operating conditions, range accuracy, output signal, and installation interface. Procurement personnel should incorporate material certificates, calibration requirements, delivery periods, after-sales support, and non-standard capabilities into the same evaluation criteria to establish executable selection standards.
After organizing the strong alkali name, concentration, maximum temperature, pressure, storage tank dimensions, installation port specifications, target measuring range, and control system signal requirements, these details can be submitted to the technical team of Xi'an Shenghongchuang Instruments & Meters Co., Ltd. to obtain recommendations on the corresponding level sensor structure, wetted materials, wiring solution, and quotation.
