Poor multilingual translation accuracy may directly cause deviations in the descriptions of key parameters such as pressure range, accuracy class, output signal, and protection rating in CE certification technical documents, thereby affecting the EU notified body's review conclusion on the declaration of conformity.
This issue is important because CE certification is not a formal review, but a substantive assessment based on technical documentation; when making a judgment, the first things to check are: whether the translated content covers all mandatory parameter items, whether it was completed by a translator with a metrology/industrial automation background, and whether it was reviewed by technical personnel whose native language is the corresponding target language.
Because CE certification requires that the parameters in technical documents must be fully consistent with the actual product performance, and must be understood unambiguously by technical personnel of the EU notified body. For example, if “0–1.6 MPa” is mistranslated as “0–16 bar”, although the values are equivalent, mixed use of units may trigger doubts about the logic of range setting.
Such errors are not issues of language style, but directly affect the integrity of the “conformity evidence chain”. Whether they constitute a risk depends on the regulatory practices of the target country——some notified bodies strictly verify unit format, decimal point format, and terminology consistency.
The applicable boundary is: only when the translation is used for internal reference or informal communication is the fault tolerance relatively high; once it enters the DoC (Declaration of Conformity), annexes to the EU Declaration of Conformity, or supporting materials for type test reports, it becomes a high-risk scenario.
These six categories of parameters are most prone to errors: pressure units (MPa/bar/psi/kPa), accuracy expression methods (±0.5%FS/±0.5%RD), supply voltage range (12–36 VDC), output signal type (4–20 mA / 0–10 V), protection rating (IP65/IP67), and ambient temperature range (-20℃ to +85℃).
Errors commonly appear as inconsistent unit abbreviations, missing the temperature symbol ℃, using English punctuation marks for decimals instead of Chinese enumeration commas, omitting positive or negative signs, and confusing FS (full scale) with RD (reading). These are not grammar issues, but issues of technical expression standards.
Whether pre-validation is needed depends on the purpose of the document: if it is to be submitted to a notified body, then a terminology comparison table review process involving sensor engineers must be embedded at the translation stage.
The ideal setup is a “dual-track review”: on the language side, it should be handled by translators whose native language is the target language and who are familiar with industrial instrumentation terminology; on the technical side, engineers familiar with standards such as EN 61326, the EN 61000 series, and pressure measurement principles should simultaneously confirm the parameter logic.
A common practice is to entrust a third-party technical translation company, but it must be clearly agreed that it provides a terminology database record, a signed page for the parameter comparison table, and traceable revision records. Pure localization companies or general translation platforms usually do not have a professional background in pressure transmitters.
Risk reminder: if sales or foreign trade personnel translate by themselves and upload the content into the CE technical file, the probability of non-conformities (NC) will increase significantly, especially in scenarios involving explosion-proof or extended medical applications.
They are mostly exposed during the technical documentation review (Technical File Review) stage by the notified body, rather than during the testing stage. The test report data itself may be correct, but if the range description in the manual is inconsistent with the test report, it will be regarded as “the technical documentation does not support the product declaration”.
Some projects are also returned at the initial application stage, requiring supplementary certified multilingual technical documents. Whether they are exposed in advance depends on the sampling depth of the notified body and the company’s past compliance record.
What truly affects the schedule is not the time spent on translation, but the rework cycle——retranslation, reissuance of the DoC, and re-archiving, which on average extends the certification cycle by 7–15 working days.
The key to judging which option is more suitable for you depends on three points: whether you already have mature technical document templates, whether the target market includes highly sensitive countries such as Germany and France, and whether you accept purchasing translation as part of the overall certification service.
